Day 3

I didn’t have as much fun today, but had some good insights.

I was invited to a CTF, or capture the flag, and was really surprised who was doing really well at it. Most of the work team did really well, but in the end  we didn’t win, though to be fair some of the best players had to leave in the middle for a meeting.

I spent most of the day working on my powerpoint for next week. There is a lot that I want to implement and there is too much that I am trying to put in, but I’m trying to draw out the bigger picture.

I had one meeting today where we just had a no-talk-of-work meeting for a half hour and my boss and I share an old hobby of cake decorating.

I had also a short meeting with a nice person who was one of the heads of compliance. That was pleasant.

I think today was a neutral day.

My 2nd Day

I started the day with talking with my new boss and trying to understand where priorities lie. I talked about some of my past life and creating a GRC framework and the chance to review with him and my peer what I have done to see if maybe we should build a roadmap to implement what I think should be happening in 2021.

I completed a lot of the training today, if not all of it. It’s hard to tell if there are other things that need to be taken. Met with Eric for a bit to just go over some high level things and then eventually met with the Chief Operating and Technology Officer, who seems nice and direct.

I worked on some things today, mostly some stuff I did Before to see how it can fit my new Now. The bigger picture GRC and impact/likelihood tables and some of the math behind it all. I had to make some changes to protect my last company. Obviously letting that information loose isn’t good, regardless of where I am in my career, it makes for a bad security person, right?

I got to shadow a call today to see how things are discussed.

Overall I want to say it was a good day!

Day 1

Today, despite issues for trying to log in, I met my new team via Zoom.

It seems that our support number is flagged as a Potential Spam number which isn’t a good thing. I was able to talk with support and finally get things working and get logged in, that later that afternoon.

I spent the rest of the afternoon taking training and talking with a couple of coworkers on the state of affairs at Magellan. I think I can be used to help change things for the better.

Some of the training that one has to go through… hint… it’s a lot! But I relearned some things about HIPAA and found where Governance documents were stored for all to see. I got familiar with some of the documents that I should. So it was good.

My LinkedIn comments on the new position was overwhelmingly positive. I have a lot of great connections!

Overall it was a good day!

End of July, End of Seven Years

Carmelo in 2013

I joined CSAA IG in August of 2013 and have been there since, until the end of July this year. I loved how much I was involved with everything and had some pretty nice work relationships. The vehicle insurance industry has taken a hit though, and CSAA IG, who specifically has customers that are also primary targets of COVID-19 has dropped the company’s insurance market share below 1%.

I have accepted a position with Magellan Health as a Director, Information Security Officer.

Jaime went ahead and took an updated photo of me for my linkedin profile. I was so proud of it I had to share it across my social networks.

Tomorrow is Day 1

July 31st, 2020, after seven years at CSAA IG, I turned in my badge, my laptop, my phone and spent the whole next week thinking about my new job at Magellan Health. I start tomorrow and will be 100% remote. To prepare for it, I ended up buying a desk that lets me sit/stand. My work area is a little bit of a mess right now, but that will clear out within the week.

Today I asked my wife to take a photo of me for my linkedin profile. I think it came out great, despite my need for a haircut! I even shared it on the other social media sites and got some loving comments.

Last Day at CSAA

Today was my last day at CSAA. Almost 7 years to the date. This coming Monday is the 7 year mark.

I made some really good relationships, learned a lot of things, and I will honestly miss it.

Here’s some photos of the Happy Hour, virtual of course.

Here’s one of my first pictures at CSAA

Sweet Child O Mine – 100 Days Later

After 100 Days, I still haven’t mastered this song. I’m not even disappointed that I don’t have the whole song memorized. It’s a tough one. My friend Evan, who demos this song for RockClass101.com has some super dexterous fingers and an amazing talent to keep a beat while playing the most difficult parts of this song. Will I continue to try to learn the rest of this song? Yes.
