Why I Wrote “The Book on GRC”

If you spend any time talking to Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), risk directors, or security engineers, you will hear a familiar frustration. Most Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) programs feel broken by design.
Teams are trapped managing dozens of spreadsheets, tracking hundreds of disconnected control requirements, and spending half the year responding to repetitive audit requests. They map NIST CSF for leadership, ISO 27001 for international clients, SOC 2 for enterprise prospects, and PCI-DSS for payment processors. Every new framework brings another audit, another evidence request, and another round of friction with engineering teams who see security as an administrative tax.
Here is the uncomfortable truth that inspired me to write The Book on GRC: A Master Practitioner’s Guide to Harmonizing Controls, Quantifying Risk, and Driving Enterprise Value: Compliance does not equal security.
Treating regulatory compliance as the ultimate destination is a dangerous trap. Organizations routinely achieve pristine audit scores while remaining fundamentally exposed to real-world threat actors.
Bridging the Gap Between the Boardroom and the Server Room
I wrote this book because I spent over 25 years building GRC programs in some of the most heavily regulated environments out there, state government, insurance, banking, and healthcare, and on both sides of assessments. I’ve served as Incident Commander during major attacks and sat across the table from skeptical boards.
Crucially, this book isn’t just born from what I’ve seen work well in practice. It is equally shaped by learning from what I’ve watched fail spectacularly, the bloated GRC tools that became expensive shelf-ware, the manual spreadsheet processes that burned out brilliant engineers, and the check-the-box compliance exercises that provided a false sense of security right before an incident struck.
When executed correctly, GRC is not a slow, manual paperwork exercise. It is the operational operating system of the enterprise. It is the engine that translates business strategy into technical safeguards, provides clear visibility into operational risk, and produces repeatable audit readiness as a natural byproduct of daily execution.
What CISOs and Risk Leaders Will Find Inside
- Business Alignment & Risk Quantification: Moving beyond subjective 5×5 heatmaps to adopt Factor Analysis of Information Risk (FAIR). Learn how to calculate downtime costs, establish RTO and RPO thresholds, and present risk to the CEO and Board in hard financial ranges.
- The Authoritative Source Engine: How to ingest competing standards (NIST, ISO, PCI, HIPAA) and normalize them into a singular internal taxonomy.
- The Common Controls Framework (CCF): Operationalizing the principle of “Test Once, Satisfy Many” to eliminate evidence redundancy and end audit fatigue for engineering teams.
- Compliance Operations & Evidence Architecture: Building immutable, WORM-enabled evidence lockers, automating continuous collection pipelines, and managing external assessors effectively.
- The 90-Day Implementation Blueprint: A pragmatic, phased roadmap for transforming or rolling out a business-aligned GRC program from day one.
Built for Practitioners, Valued by Executives
This book is written for the hands-on security professional.
- For CISOs and VPs: It provides the frameworks needed to align security investments with business risk, streamline compliance overhead, and present actionable board-level telemetry.
- For GRC Directors and Managers: It offers practical blueprints for building common control frameworks, managing third-party risk, and surviving audit cycles without burning out your team.
- For Security Engineers and Architects: It demonstrates how compliance requirements map directly to technical controls, infrastructure-as-code, and continuous evidence collection.
If you are ready to throw out the notion that GRC must be a slow, manual process, build your baseline, map your controls once, and run your program like the core business function it is, this book was written for you.
